Doug: Flexible Envelope Generator and LFO

Doug does a lot in a little package.

First off, Doug is a looping, 6 phase envelope generator. As well as the usual Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release phases, Doug adds a Wait phase – which delays the start of the Attack – and a Hold phase, which holds the peak level after Attack and before Decay.

Doug has a traditional Gate input, and a Trigger input – which kicks off the envelope when the CV goes positive, but ignores the length of the signal.

Looping the envelope can generate complex modulation waveforms up to audio frequencies.

Doug can also be a traditional LFO. Five waveforms, plus white noise, are available. You get Triangle (or, optionally, Sine), Square, S&H, and both rising and falling Sawtooth. The waveforms can be mixed together (with the noise) for more interesting modulation possibilities.

The LFO can be retriggered, and can even function in one-shot mode, where a trigger generates just a single cycle of the LFO. This is great, for example, for unusual envelopes or for generating a new, random S&H value each trigger.

Finally, The two outputs of Doug can be switched from unipolar (0v-10v) to bipolar (
±5v).

Doug is available on its own, or with a 2HP switch panel that breaks out the four option links on the back on the module. These options swap the Triangle LFO output for Sine, switch the envelope generator from Log to Linear, and force the Gate or Trigger inputs to restart the envelope generator from zero rather than the current output voltage.
